Car air ventilation system cabin filters and their purpose

Modern car air ventilation systems have a cabin filter located within air box, normally located behind the glovebox. These can be of different type – particulate filter, activated carbon filter and N99 micron (medical grade) technology.

This filter is capable of filtering leaves, dust, bugs, soot, fumes, spores and pollen, just to name a few things you can expect to enter your cabin without an air filter.. Depending on the type of filter, the cabin filter can also reduce bacteria, viruses, noxious odours and exhaust gas odours.

When to change your cabin filter:

• Manufacturers’ have recommended intervals for replacement – check your car service book, or as a general rule 15,000klm – 20,000klm or at least annually.
• Asthmatics and or people whom suffer allergies from pollen may wish to replace the filter more regularly.
• Regularly commuting in extreme dusty conditions will also reduce change interval.
• Parking your car regularly under trees can block the cabin filter prematurely but can be cleaned during car servicing – ask your local Autobahn Service Centre.
• Replacement may be necessary if noxious odour(s) are present continually in the cabin.

Autobahn recommends your car cabin filter be replaced as scheduled in your manufacturers’ log book, or, 15,000klm – 20,000klm (Annually), or, experiencing signs of performance shortfall and odours. Replacement filter should meet or exceed manufacturer specification.
